The Great Controversy:Every creed, whether religious or humanist, implicitly has two sides, open and inclusive or insular and exclusive. In Christianity the former, selfless aspect, is represented by the teachings and example of Jesus (whether historical or not) while the latter, selfish aspect, is depicted by Satan. Every creed hinges on this choice. Forget dogmas, miracles and theological minutia — forget God — ultimately this choice is all that matters. Within any one creed those who are open and inclusive are Brethren with people of all creeds. Those who are insular and exclusive recognise no Brethren even within their own creed or even among others who are insular and exclusive.

To consider persons and events and situations only in the light of their effect upon myself is to live on the doorstep of hell

According to Michael Shermer (in Why People Believe Weird Things), early Objectivism was a bit of a cult that surrounded Ayn Rand. Objectivism is to philosophy what Scientology is to religion and what Libertarianism is to politics.

Objectivism is to philosophy what Scientology is to religion and what Libertarianism is to politics. And what Reaganomics is to classical economics and what Evolutionary Psychology is to both evolutionary biology and to evidence-based psychology.

“Anyone who is looking for the final grand irony of the 2012 presidential campaign need look no further: The nominee who selected as his running mate Paul Ryan, devotee of the objectivist philosophy dedicated completely to self-interest, is now complaining that too many people voted for their own self-interest as opposed to for the good of society as a whole.” -Ladysisyphus

“A passion for the prose and philosophy of Ayn Rand tells us a great deal about an individual, none of it good. There are few surer signs of a poor reader, a poor thinker and an unpleasant person than a well-thumbed copy of Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead.” - Hal Crowther, The Alarming Revival of Ayn Rand: The Right’s Weirdest Idol of Them All
