The point is valid with respect to popular histories. William Dampier mapped parts of the continent nearly a hundred years before Cook and it has long been known that the Dutch (e.g. Able Tazman) made occassional landfalls on the south, west and north coasts. Now it seems the Chinese may have visited the east coast as early as 1421. The continuation of the "Captain Cook Conspiracy" is more due to journalists than to serious historians. It's akin to the "Conspiracy" of Columbus "discovering" the Americas.
