"My God is not an architect!" As I recall, this statement was declared at an Anglican Synod discussing Freemasonry. By contrast, I think most Freemasons would have no problem with the title of an Indonesian film: "God is not an Architect but the Greatest Architect is God. " Similarly, we might remind those who object to reference to God as an architect, that neither is S/He a shepherd, a dove, a carpenter nor any of the other metaphors commonly employed to refer to that which is ineffable. Further, we acknowledge the inadequacy of any one reference to the Deity by using a different title in each of our Degrees. Indeed, we are in good company when we refer to the One God as, The Great Architect of the Universe, the term being known from the works of Thomas Aquinas and extensively used by John Calvin.
