Spandrels are somewhat similar to the products of Exaptation. The former are more or less incidental features which arise along with evolutionary advantageous features as a result of contingent gene expression. The latter are features which had an evolutionary advantage for one function and were then applied for a further function. Our exceptional intelligence no doubt conferred a general evolutionary advantage which did not necessarily restrict the specific application of that intelligence.
