I have received the following query about associations between Lions Clubs & Freemasonry. I will pass on any information received:
As a Lions member for almost 40 years I would be interested in learning more about early connections between the craft and Lionism.
I have a picture of the first logo of Lions Clubs International, dated 1916 which is an "L' in a circle superimposed upon the square and compasses. The caption refers to "the early ties to the Masons". Can someone explain those early ties?
The reason you are seeing the original Lions Clubs International Logo is that it was just published in Lions Magazine. Lions International has just redesigned their two headed logo and showed its evolution from the first to the latest design. For those who are not Lions the word stands for the phrase Liberty, Intelligence, In our Nations Service.
The founder of the Largest service club in the world was Melvin Jones, a brother Mason and a Chicago businessman, who was their executive secretary for many years and so he designed their first logo.

Wikipedia: Lions Clubs International (LCI) is the world's largest secular service organization with over 44,500 clubs and more than 1.4 million members in 201 countries around the world... Lions Clubs International was founded in the United States in 1917 by Melvin Jones, a Freemason and Chicago businessman. Jones asked, with regard to his colleagues, "What if these men who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?" Jones' personal code, "You can't get very far until you start doing something for somebody else," reminds many Lions of the importance of community service.
