Nowhere are the words “Lest we forget” uttered with greater feeling than among indigenous communities, members of which shared in the travails of war but who were often forgotten by the wider community. Indigenous POW Gunner Percy to be remembered in RedfernOn his return, he was again treated as a non-citizen.

On Remembrance Day (11 November) last year, my wife Brenda and I were in Turkey and later that week were able to visit Galliopli (a very moving experience). Today Brenda is in France, attending the ANZAC commemoration at Villers-Bretonneux.

My Paris adventure continues to be absolutely fabulous. The trip to the Somme was so very worthwhile. The Dawn Service at Villers-Bretonneaux was very moving. The Cathedral in the nearby city of Amiens has to be seen to be believed. It is twice the size of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and has a few less squillion people moving through it at once.. My rented apartment in the 10th arrondissement, Canal St Martin area, is just the ticket. It has a very modern bathroom, a (typically) tiny kitchen, a bedroom with a very comfy bed and pillows. It has a tiny balcony, overlooking the street (Rue Richerand). Am doing lots of walking (including up the 6 flights of stairs up to my apartment). The Metro is very easy to use, the only problem is walking in the right direction when you ascend to the street ! This is solved by approaching the waiter of the nearest bar, brasserie or restaurant, and saying: Bonjour Monsieur, comment ca va ? Je suis perdue. Je cherche.....(Hullo Sir, how are you ? I am lost. I am looking for......) Today I walked down through the Marais (3rd and 4th arr.), very old buildings, formerly the Jewish quarter. I saw the very impressive (from the outside) Hotel de Ville (like a town hall). In the square in front of it was one of Paris' many, old (du Belle Epoque) carousels (merry-go-round). Because I wanted to, and because I could, I had a ride on it !
