Of course humans can learn. There is even a rumor that I learned to type. I was unaware of any researcher claiming that humans don't learn? My comment was in reference to your hounds. As for your hounds, bearing in mind that we both agree they can learn behaviours... I think Brother Brandt meant Reply 11. It explained how human learning led to the loss of instincts.

For example, face recognition. Recognition of faces or whatever is not a behaviour. A good deal of behavior is directly linked to our ability to recognize faces.

I am not well schooled on the neuroscience side of things but a close friend of mine is and I generally go to him to hear about some of the most recent work and even the classic works so that I can get a better understanding. Ask him about instincts and the Hypothalamus and its relationship to the Cerebral Cortex which is especially developed in humans. When we do get out and talk science subjects like this have come up. He was telling me about cognitive ability being limited when certain parts of the brain become more active.

That it does. Is that learned as well?

The weather happens independently of our learning. Our behaviour in relation to it is learned (apart from simple reflexes, such as shivering).

I would not think that weather is dependent on our learning. I am just amazed by the homogeneity of our behavior under the hypothesis that there are no instincts or innate behaviors. The statistical improbability is interesting and should be front page news.

With the weather is it any wonder that people learn to get in out of the rain?

I guess everyone just stands there until someone teaches them.

I guess everyone just stands there until someone teaches them. We are born remarkably helpless (unable even to support our own heads) and learn over many years. As for coming in from the rain, the relative advantages or disadvantages are clearly such that, under most circumstances other memes are unlikely to have prevailed. Even so, where needs must we do stay out. To demonstrate the possibility of innate behaviours (instincts) any example would need to be non-obvious and universal to even remain in the running (strictly and ethologically speaking, they should also be fixed).
