Protoscience en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protoscience"In the philosophy of science, a protoscience is a new science trying to establish its legitimacy.[1] Protoscience is distinguished from pseudoscience by its standard practices of good science, such as a willingness to be disproven by new evidence, or to be replaced by a more predictive theory.[citation needed] Compare fringe science, which is considered highly speculative or even strongly refuted.[2] Some protosciences go on to become an accepted part of mainstream science.[3]"

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fringe_science"Fringe science is scientific inquiry in an established field of study that departs significantly from mainstream or orthodox theories, and is classified in the "fringes" of a credible mainstream academic discipline. Three classifications of scientific ideas have been identified (center, frontier, fringe) with mainstream scientists typically regarding fringe concepts as highly speculative or even strongly refuted.[1] However, according to Rosenthal "Accepted science may merge into frontier science, which in turn may merge into more far-out ideas, or fringe science. Really wild ideas may be considered beyond the fringe, or pseudoscientific." [2]"

I recall the time I got in trouble on MFoL for invoking this principle. Funny how they are fond of saying how lightly they moderate. In practice you can say almost anything, so long as you don't disagree with the staff there (whether in their capacity as staff or not) or question whoever happens to be the current freak they are maintaining so everyone can gawk at them.

Special Pleading in science might include a Pseudo-scientist claiming exemption from Occam's Razor and from Popper's Falsification. With the real reason being that if applied they would discredit his pet theory.

That quality enshrined in a man who, having killed his mother and father, throws himself on the mercy of the court because he is an orphanLeo Rosten (defining "Chutzpah") I reposted this elsewhere, hope you don't mind. Apparently, for some, facts are not as important as are how false beliefs makes one feel (the Dogon and Sirius B, in this instance).
