“Why do you overemphasize the value of suffering in your sermons?” said the Master.
“Because it seasons us to face whatever life may bring,” was the preacher’s reply.
The Master said nothing to that.
Later a disciple asked, “Exactly what does suffering season us to face?”
“More suffering, presumably,” said the Master with a smile.

A disciple was prone to fits of prolonged depression. “My doctor insists I take medication to keep my depression at bay,” he said.
“Well then, why don’t you?” said the Master.
“Because it might damage my liver and shorten my life.”
The Master asked, “Would you rather have a healthy liver than a happy mood? One year of life is worth more than twenty years of hibernation.”
Later he said to his disciples: “It is with life as with a tale; not how long it is but how good, is what matters.”

“What’s so original about this man?” asked a visitor. “All he gives you is a hash of stories, proverbs and sayings from other Masters.”
A woman disciple smiled. She once had a cook, she said, who made the most wonderful hash in the world.
“How on earth do you make it, my dear? You must give me the recipe.”
The cook’s face glowed with pride. She said, “Well ma’am, I’ll tell yer: beef’s nothin’; pepper’s nothin’; onion’s nothin’: but when I throws myself into the hash - that what makes it what it is.”

“Once we begin to form good resolutions,” said the Master, “we are given every opportunity of carrying them out.” Among my New Year’s resolutions are no more partying all night and spending less time on my computer.

'What do you say of the principle that injury should be recompensed with kindness?' The master replied, 'With what then will you recompense kindness? Recompense injury with justice, and kindness with kindness'
