Russel Holland a.k.a. Paul said. "My teeth are very different from those of our cat. And my digestive system a lot longer - more time for meat to rot." a406.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=esoteric&thread=929&page=4#16410Having had the honour of being again banned from that looney tunes forum I will respond to this common smug myth here under Pseudosciences. I his book "Never Mind the Bullocks Here's the Science" science commentator Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki debunked the myth of meat rotting in our gut and showed how we evolved to be omnivorous. Drawing on his wealth of detail, there is the point that our teeth include both carnivorous cutting incisors and herbivorous grinding molars. Dr. Karl also showed how the enzyme pepsin in our gut is very efficient at digesting meat.

There are sound arguments to advocate a vegetarian diet or to at least reduce meat consumption. These include compassion and environmental issues. They do NOT include health where meat is part of a balanced diet. Humans, in contrast, don’t have gut bacteria that can digest cellulose. That is why we can’t eat grass at all, why there is so little caloric value for us in vegetables, and why we call cellulose “insoluble fiber”: it comes straight out the back end. Interestingly, I understand the appendix, which in herbivores helps digest cellulose, has in humans atrophied through the process of evolution.

Compassion? Without the consumption of meat many domestic animals would not be raised. What is the choice? No life or a good life ending in a humane death? Since all life is mortal, death comes sooner or later to us all. Life feeds on life. Environment? While it does not make environmental sense to feed grain to cattle, much grazing land is unsuited to other forms of agriculture. Cattle belching may produces greenhouse gases because of their vegetarian diet but that has been over-stated and is being addressed. See www.rps.psu.edu/probing/cow_burps.html

... life ending in a humane death... Aye, there's the rub. There are too many exceptions to humane slaughter. Indeed, globally it may not even be the norm.

There are too many exceptions to humane slaughter. Where we can be assured of humane processes there is not a problem. Buy Australian produce.

Dr. Karl concluded that chapter of his book saying. "If you want your meat to rot, you need to put it to the side of your plate." As I said to R.H. before being banned again. "If meat is rotting in anyone's gut they need to see a doctor." At the cellular level we can see why vegetables are hard to digest compared to meat. Plant cells are contained within both a wall and a membrane while animal cells have only a membrane. See www.diffen.com/difference/Animal_Cell_vs_Plant_CellIt is possible to have a healthy vegetarian diet but it requires much greater attention to detail than an omnivorous diet and can more easily go wrong.

Like most vegetarian propaganda, it’s not just false, it’s an inversion of truth. As the proverb says, “When you point your finger, your other three fingers point back at you.” A few years ago PETA had a highly controversial campaign based on the myth that meat consumption resulted in low libido and virility - "I Threw a Party, but the Cattlemen Couldn't Come. Eating meat can cause impotence. Go vegan!" - They soon drew the ads in the face of overwhelming publicized evidence to the contrary. Debbie Does Salad. Do vegetarians really have better sex? But this practice [vegetarianism], in which youthful love of austerity finds charm, calls for attentions more complicated than those of culinary refinement itself; and it separates us too much from the common run of men in a function which is nearly always public, and in which either friendship or formality presides
Marguerite Yourcenar (Born this day 1903)
