The question of 'sound mind and body' seems to me to be anachronistic as the 'born free' one, as few people in the West would have slaves as parents (though slavery is still not wiped out).
I have seem some extensions of the question that it does not signify people with disabilities (PWDs) from taking part if they can adapt.
The reason it seems to me to be worse than the 'free' question is that up to 25% of people will develop some form of physical or mental disability in their life, and also as we age we become far less mobile and in effect we develop disabilities compared to our younger lives.
And I have met many people through Masonry who have struggled with depression at least once in their lives.
Now I have not heard of any lodges black balling people who have a disability and several WM's have said that of course they adjust things for brethren who are older or who develop problems. It just seems odd to have this on the application process.
One thing I really like about the 21st C is that we are no longer shutting away PWD in wards or ghettos. It is great that many prominent people are coming out and talking of their experiences with physical and mental disability.
Masonry rightly champions charity and helping people, we should make sure we do this to our own candidates too.
