As I recall, in Piers Anthony's Planet of Tarot Sci-fi trilogy, the protagonist was a latter-day Waldensian priest who encountered God face-to-face, only it was God's other face, that of Satan. As Satan, God was more of a psychoanalyst whose role was to persuade those who condemned themselves that they were not good bad enough to merit Hell. The yarn coloured some of my subsequent cogitations.
