The Liberty Cap can be traced back with certainty to Phrygia. Beyond there we enter the realm of legend, which we should perhaps first cautiously consider as metaphor: There are ancient, wide-spread reports of a bent or crooked, hollow mountain, behind which the sun was said to have set each night (also said to be the home of the Phoenix) and on which it has been suggested, the Liberty Cap was originally modeled.
