The Vatican has today published Benedict XVI's latest encyclical, Purgamentum onus.
His Holiness has sought to address widespread concerns over his recent comments on the use of condoms and, while reiterating the church's opposition to their use where solely intended to prevent conception, he has expressed his approval in principle, where the primary intention is to prevent the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. The Pope qualified this approval with his concern about reports from clerics as to the remaining risk of infection due to tears developing in many condoms while being used. His Holiness added that, if this problem can be overcome, the Church would again look at the issue.
