A Sydney Anglican priest says countries like Australia have paved the way for the Church of England's vote to allow the ordination of female bishops by showing that "the sky hasn't fallen in" by endorsing them.
The General Synod, the British church's legislative body, held the crucial vote overnight at a meeting in York following a passionate eight-hour debate which pitched conservatives against liberals.
The vote took place across the three houses of the General Synod. Bishops voted to bring forward legislation to ordain female bishops by 28 to 12, clergy were in favour by 124 to 44 and laity by 111 to 68.
