WORLD YOUTH DAYPope Benedict XVI The Pope is in Australia for World Youth Day and, while there may be a general consensus that the world is already overpopulated, the Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, took the opportunity to argue the long discredited notion that we must populate or perish!? Meanwhile, the chief organizer of the event, Bishop Anthony Fisher, has criticized victims and families who 'dwell crankily' on their experiences of sexual abuse within the church!?

Instead of drawing on its spiritual wealth, this Church continues to focus on things that are entirely outside its province. Reproduction (and sex between consenting adults, for that matter) are a private affair, and until it recognises that adults more often than not engage for its pleasure and the closeness it brings between two (consenting adult) individuals, it will continue to stick its nose where not wanted. Perhaps Pell should quit the Church (as, stupidly, its priests are generally - with some exceptions - not permitted to marry, nor have sex outside of marriage) and practice what he preaches!
As to the abuses by some individuals who have in the past used the protected environment of the cloth to perpetrate such abuse on young people, it would be better that it recognise that its own past ways of dealing with such only encouraged further abuses and networks of abusers.
