Coach Philosophical after defeat:
questions NRL's belief in Hegelian dialectic
BRISBANE, Monday — The Bronco' 17-16 loss to the Knights in Round 10 has been met with a typically dour, level-headed response by coach Wayne Bennett, who used the posy-match press conference to question the epistemological foundations of Hegel's theory of dialectics.
asked to comment on the recent publication of John Haugeland's Essays in the Metaphysics of Mind, Bennett was philosophical, saying "Both me and Gordie [Tallis, Broncos captain] liked the way Haugy elaborates and then undermines a battery of common assumptions about the foundational notions of intentionality and representation."
"In doing so, he provides a refreshing counterpoint to the social theory of blokes like Hegel," Bennett added.
Bennett's comments drew an angry response from NRL [National Rugby League] Chief Executive David Gallop, who publicly rebuked the Broncos' coach in a press release. "The league has always taken a strictly Hegelian view of conceptions of freedom and how they underpin social theory," Gallop's sternly worded treatise stated "Everyone in the NRL — from the fans down — is doing a superb job interpreting Hegel correctly and demonstrating the richness and power of his vision of the rational social order."
But Bennett refused to accept Gallop's criticism, slamming the League's philosophical inertia. At a midweek sportsman's night, Bennett sidestepped a request for him to tell the story of how he got shitfaced on the '97 regional rout, choosing instead to attack Melbourne Storm prop Robert Tanielu's recent public critique of disengagement, instrumental reason and atomism.
Visibly riled, the Broncos coach sarcastically noted that individual instances of knowledge, judgment, discourse or action cannot be intelligible in abstractions from the outside world.
The controversial comments sparked a furious audience debate, which almost descended into violence.
The NRL today confirmed it is considering fining the Broncos three premiership points if Bennett continues to bring pure Hegelian dialectic into disrepute.
