The UGL of NSW & ACT, like England has never officially defined our Ancient Landmarks. Similarly, until now, neither has sought to define or limit the esoteric contents of our rituals. This hands-off approach had the advantage of allowing Brethren to weigh and consider different opinions without dogmatically laying down what is or is not veiled and illustrated by our allegories and symbols. The outrage generated by this resolution may have the effect of forcing a back-down, with an implicit, official acknowledgment of our esoteric contents (that which the builders sought to reject may become the head-stone). Personally, with symbolism I like to join the dots myself, after reflecting on what other have to say and applying reason. Any official acknowledgment of esoteric content may have the effect of appearing, in effect, to even countenance wacko, speculative nonsense, such as R.H.'s pink unicorns. There is truth in the following caution posted on the website of the Grand Lodge British Columbia & Yukon: Within Freemasonry there is a tendency to embellish and add to the simplicity of masonic teachings, ascribing significance where none was intended; mistaking visual mnemonics or artistic licence for symbolic depth. Those outside Freemasonry fall into similar error with the added intent of deprecating that which they do not understand

While still maintaining that the Craft rituals have intrinsic, esoteric elements, let us put those aside for now. If, as has been suggested, the resolution is only intended to apply to the Craft, and if, as has also been suggested, the Royal Arch Degree has esoteric elements, e.g., astrological allusions, then we face a difficulty in separating those elements from the Craft, since Regulation 1 of our Book of Constitutions declares and pronounces: That pure and Ancient Masonry consists of the following Degrees, and no more, viz.: Those of the Entered Apprentice, the Fellow Craft, and the MM, together with the Honourable Degree of Mark MM, and the Supreme Order of the Holy Royal Arch. Further, if we wish to distance the Craft from its esoteric “other Orders,” what is to become of recent efforts to have greater involvement of these different branches of the NSW & ACT Masonic family? Are they to be brought to naught? "Move along, people. Nothing to see here"

I have received many emails regarding this resolution. The following is an excerpt of what an especially learned Brother from another Australian jurisdiction had to say about the subject:

"The definition sound to me like a broad description of the secrets and mysteries of Freemasonry."
W.M. - What are the peculiar objects of research in this degree?
C. - The hidden mysteries of Nature and Science.

Elsewhere ( Political Freedom), Brandt asked: With that in mind, I guess Lodge Southern Cross[/b], which meets in the Grand Lodge building, will need to either toe the line or hand in their Charter:

Philip, I have been sent the replies to questions put on notice to GL and from my reading of them it appears a de facto censorship now is in place

Text for the Week:
And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables
