Figueira [Portugal] Resident Who Had Sex Change Divides Portuguese Freemasonry www.asbeiras.pt/2010/12/figueirense-que-mudou-de-sexo-divide-a-maconaria-portuguesaDecember 6, 2010 A legal or an ontological question? Emanuel Alves, 37 years old, gave way to Ema Sofia Alves, 37 years old. The sex change (ongoing process) of this Figueiran citizen did not mean only the change of gender: there are preconceptions and questions of a practical nature to overcome. Some of these obstacles have already been overcome. Others, however, present a high degree of difficulty. Emanuel Alves was a masseuse for Naval [soccer (football) team] but stopped being one when he decided to change sex. However, Ema Sofia continues to pursue her profession, passing from being a male nurse to being a female nurse in the Figueira da Foz District Hospital. When she was a man, she still belonged to the Consistency Masonic Lodge, but left it about a year ago, just when she started the process of gender reassignment. The transformation has agitated the Masons, according to "Saturday" magazine. However, the "Daily to the Edges" found that Ema would like to return to the brotherhood, but the statutes do not allow it. "I don't understand how a progressive organization like the Grand Orient of Lusitania is so conservative," says one of its members, who requested anonymity. "Gradual, not progressive," correct the historians Pedro Brandao and Antonio Fidalgo.

Great post, and I wonder how we here would handle this situation, let alone UGLE & Us masonry.
I honestly had never thought of this

There is nothing to handle.
The person in question left the craft when the change began. He/she is now a "civillian" whose personal life is no longer a masonic concern.

Great post, and I wonder how we here would handle this situation, let alone UGLE & US masonry. There was a case raising similar issues back in the late 18th C., that of Chevalier D'Eon De Beaumont. Naturally, about one in 2,000 births is of androgynous or ambiguous sex anyway. The likelihood of some raised as male having become Freemasons is almost a certainty. Formerly doctors and midwives would assign a gender and do what they could to "correct" the condition. Now we are finding many medical jurisdictions advise leaving the condition until the person is old enough to decide for themself. If mainstream Freemasonry chooses to persist with its "No Women!" rule, we need a policy of how to proceed with such cases.

You need to re-read the original message. It is a problem if the person wants to resume their membership. That is the point. How would your particular GL handle this matter?
