We luckier with our neighbours than are they with theirs. However, some neighbours we hardly ever see: Titan Stick Insects, the world's longest insects, are sometimes found blown from their trees and injured after storms. Otherwise, their camouflage is so good no one really knows if they are common or not. Moreover, they are camouflaged at every stage of their life cycle. When laying eggs, the female flicks them away so as to be widely dispersed in the leaf litter. The eggs resemble Acacia seeds which are collected and stored by ants, putting them out of reach of most predators. Upon hatching, they resemble ants and so manage to escape from the nest and, upon reaching maturity, they are virtually impossible to detect (see text linked below).
