We might want to consider what, IMO may have been an earnest but misguided attempt to restore eroticism to religion and sex among the sacraments (I can not imagine the world being ready for many generations). Portrait of Sir Francis Dashwood, 15th Baron le Despencer (1708-1781), founder of the "Hellfire Club," by William Hogarth (1697-1764) from the late 1750s, parodying Renaissance images of Francis of Assisi. The Hellfire Club was far from being unique and was probably less extreme than the Beggar's Benison (make of it what you will).
