The Great Torc(Snettisham) The distinguishing badge of Celtic initiates (pre-Christian). The word torc means twisted, as it was to resemble rope. Worn around the neck, especially during ceremonials, the eyelets appear to have allowed attachment to a real rope. The torc may have been part of the Celtic head cult, serving to emphasise the higher nature. It is also said to have represented slavery, but only to the gods (otherwise free). Modern, clerical "dog-collars" may be reminiscent of the ancient torcs.
